The people behind the cup
Meet the Founders
Eleanor Whitmore
Co-founder & Head Barista
Eleanor grew up in Edinburgh, in a family where the kitchen was always warm and the oven was never off. Her parents ran a small bakery on Leith Walk, and she spent her school holidays serving scones to regulars who came as much for the chat as the baking.
After studying hospitality in Edinburgh, she moved to Melbourne — and fell headlong into the world of specialty coffee. She trained at three of the city's most respected roasteries, learning to taste the difference between a poorly-extracted shot and a transcendent one.
She returned to London in 2016 convinced that Islington — with its market streets and independent spirit — was exactly where a place like Brew & Co belonged. She was right.
James Alderton
Co-founder & Head Baker
James grew up in Cornwall, spending weekends at his grandmother's side in a kitchen that smelled permanently of clotted cream and warm pastry. She taught him that the best food is made slowly, with care, and with the right people around the table.
He went on to train in French patisserie technique at a London culinary school, and spent several years working the pastry section at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Covent Garden. It taught him precision — but he missed the warmth.
From 2015 he began selling his own bakes at Borough Market, where he met Eleanor over a shared flask of filter coffee. The rest, as they say, is Brew & Co.
How we got here
Our Journey
2017
A Meeting at Borough Market
Eleanor was selling hand-roasted beans from a stall. James had set up beside her with trays of Cornish shortbread. By midday they were sharing a flask of filter coffee and talking about their shared dream of opening a place of their own.
2019
The Arch Opens
After two years of planning, tastings, and nearly running out of savings, Brew & Co opened its doors at Railway Arch 14 in Islington. The first week's queue stretched to the street.
2020
Community First
When London went into lockdown, we pivoted overnight. Free coffee for NHS workers, community supply boxes for elderly neighbours, and a click & collect that kept the arch alive through the hardest months.
2022
Time Out Recognises Us
Time Out London named us one of the city's Best Independent Cafés — an honour we immediately passed on to our regulars, who are the real reason we exist.
2024
Growing the Kitchen
We expanded our kitchen space, launched a weekend supper club, and started hosting quarterly latte art championships. The arch has never been busier.
What we stand for
Our Values
Community
A place where neighbours become regulars, and regulars become friends. Every seat at every table matters to us.
Craft
Every cup is pulled with intention. Every pastry is baked from scratch before dawn. No shortcuts, ever.
Sustainability
Direct-trade beans, zero-waste kitchen, and compostable packaging. We take care of the planet that takes care of our farmers.
We'd love to meet you
